Canoeing and Kayaking

There are some pretty epic routes in and around Wawa. Dip your paddles (and toes) into one of Wawa’s canoe and kayak routes and experience nature from a completely different angle.

Anjigami River Canoe Route

Location: Mijinemungshing Lake to the Michipicoten River to Lake Superior
Length: 70 km (5 Days)
Difficulty: Expert
Highlights: The route follows a logger’s spring drive route of the 1920′s.

Dog (University) River Canoe Route

Location: Paint Lake Road to Lake Superior
Length: 37km 3 Days
Difficulty: Expert/Advanced
Highlights: Isolated technical whitewater river that tests even the most seasoned paddler. Wonderful views of Denison Falls near the mouth.

Dog Lake to Lake Superior

Location: Dog Lake, Manitowik Lake, Whitefish Lakes, Michipicoten River, Lake Superior.
Length: 3-5 Days
Difficulty: Intermediate
Highlights: Visit the abandoned Hudson Bay Post adjacent to Buck’s Marina on the Michipicoten River.

Fenton/Treeby Lake

Location: Lake Superior Provincial Park
Length: 16km loop through 6 lakes
Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
Highlights: Good overnight trip for beginner canoeists. Boreal fringe forest visible.

Magpie River

Location: Wawa
Length: 1 Day
Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
Highlights: Treeless area, Magpie Terrace Conservation area and Bathtub Falls on this route.

Michipicoten Island

Location: Michipicoten Island, Lake Superior
Length: 7 Days
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

Sand River Canoe Route

Location: Sand Lake to Lake Superior
Length: 56km (5days)
Difficulty: Expert
Highlights: Several waterfalls and fast stretches of water. Sand Lake is only accessible via the Algoma Central Railway.

Mijinemungshing Lake

Location: Mijinemungshing Lake Road off Highway 17,
Length: Day or Overnight
Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
Highlights: Many bays and secret inlets on this large inland lake in Lake Superior Provincial Park

Michipicoten River

Location: Scott Falls Dam to Lake Superior
Length: 14 km
Difficulty: Intermediate
Highlights: Great place for bald eagle viewing in the fall.
