Seniors Skill Swap Workshop
Press Release: November 12, 2024
Wawa Seniors Attend Skill Swap Workshop about Connecting on Social Media
The Municipality of Wawa has received funding from the Ontario Government through the Seniors Community Grant to provide the Senior Skill Swap Program. Colton Liddle, Program Coordinator, in partnership with the Wawa Goose Seniors Club, has recently hosted the first of six workshops designed to provide seniors aged 55 and over with opportunities to share or gain practical skills and knowledge, while connecting them to their peers and community.
On Thursday November 7, 2024, a dozen senior community members participated in a Connecting on Social Media workshop, led by Kelly Moore-Mckenzie, a long-time resident and retired educator of Wawa. The attendees were taught about the most prominent and used social media platform, Facebook, and why it could be a good tool to use when connecting with family or friends. Attendees were guided through processes such as, adding friends, sending messages, using emoji reactions and adjusting privacy settings. The group enjoyed baked goods, coffee and tea provided by Judy Page Catering while the workshop took place.
Attendees were enthusiastic and asked many questions, excited to learn about the useful ways to use Facebook. Overall, the workshop was a great success and an excellent introduction of a commonly used social media platform that provided a basis of skills for building upon. The next workshop is titled Travel Club and will take place on December 5, 2024 at 1pm and will be hosted at the Wawa Goose Seniors Club. This workshop will aim to share information that will provide attendees with the skills necessary to plan safe travels.
