Wawa Seniors Attend Skill Swap Workshop on Painting

The Municipality of Wawa has received funding from the Ontario Government through the Seniors Community Grant to provide the Senior Skill Swap Program. Colton Liddle, Program Coordinator, in partnership with the Wawa Goose Senior Center, has recently hosted the 4th of 6 free workshops designed to provide seniors aged 55 and over with opportunities to share or gain practical skills and knowledge, while connecting them to their peers and community.

On Thursday January 30th, a group of senior community members participated in a painting workshop led by Pauline Dawson, a long time resident and registered early childhood educator of Wawa. The painting theme for this workshop was ‘Hopes of Spring”. The instructor led the group step by step from applying the back ground to the colourful pedals of the flowers.

Throughout the process Pauline shared her experiences in painting; from how the layers applied create depth, to using water to thin the paint so the colour blends into the canvas.  Slowly each participants canvas was transformed from white cotton to colourful floral scenes of spring. Although everyone was following the same layout each canvas had its own unique touch on the theme.

Overall the workshop was a great success where skills were shared and gained. Up next on our workshop calendar is a writing workshop where participants will be instructed on how to put their personal stories to paper. The writing workshop will take place on February 13, 2025 at 1:30pm. If you are interested in this workshop or want to learn more about future workshops, please contact Colton at seniorprogramcoordinator@wawa.cc or 705-856-2244 ext. 239.
