Wawa Seniors attend skill swap workshop on Sewing Machine Maintenance
Press Release - January 13, 2025
The Municipality of Wawa has received funding from the Ontario Government through the Seniors Community Grant to provide the Senior Skill Swap Program. Colton Liddle, Program Coordinator, in partnership with the Wawa Goose Senior Center, has recently hosted the 3rd of 6 workshops designed to provide seniors aged 55 and over with opportunities to share or gain practical skills and knowledge, while connecting them to their peers and community.
On Thursday November 7, 2025, a dozen senior community members participated in a Sewing Machine Maintenance workshop, led by Claudette Gratton, a long time resident and avid sewer of Wawa. The attendees were taught how to expose the cleanable parts of their machines and were given proper tools and techniques for cleaning and removing built up lint and debris. Once the participants machines were cleaned they were instructed on where and how to oil the moving parts. After the machines were cleaned and oiled the instructor led everyone through putting their machines back together.
With clean and freshly oiled machines, the instructor had everyone run some stitches through their machines to ensure everything was working as it should. The instructor was also able to diagnose some machine issues and informed the group on how to resolve them.
Overall the workshop was a success thanks to the informed and experienced instructor, Claudette. A special thanks to Mary at Fenlon’s pharmacy for providing low lint thread to the group. Up next, we have a painting workshop on January 30, 2025 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Participants will be instructed on how to develop a piece of art inspired by “Hopes of Spring”.
