Wawa Seniors Attend Skill Swap Workshop on Writing Your Story

The Municipality of Wawa received funding from the Ontario Government through the Senior Community Grant to provide the Senior Skill Swap Program. Colton Liddle, Program Coordinator, in partnership with the Wawa Goose Seniors Center, has recently hosted the fifth of six workshops designed to provide seniors aged 55 and over with opportunities to share or gain practical skills and knowledge, while connecting them with their peers and community.

On Thursday, February 13th, 2025, a group of seniors met at the Wawa Goose Senior Centre to participate in a writing workshop, led by long time Wawa resident, local author and editor, Kaireen Morrison. The theme for this writing workshop was “Writing Your Story”. The workshop kicked off with Kaireen sharing some of her history and how her book series “Through Our Eyes” came to be. Participants were provided with a list of questions that acted as a foundation for their own stories. Each person thoughtfully put pencil to paper as they recalled their youth and answered these questions. After each set of questions were answered, the group shared stories and had discussions about writing.

bookMany participants were delighted by this process as it sparked memories they had not thought of in quite some time. Kaireen spent time with each participant to provide direction or feedback as they developed their stories.

Overall the workshop was a great success; connections were made as well as skills shared and gained. Wrapping up this program will be our 6th and final workshop on Home Maintenance. This workshop will take place Thursday March 13th at 1:30 pm at the Wawa Goose Senior Centre. If you would like to sign up for this workshop or want to learn more about it, please contact Colton Liddle at 705-856-2244 Extension 239, or seniorprogramcoordinator@wawa.cc.
